How the US Immigration Document Checklist Tool Works
This tool generates a personalised USCIS document checklist based on your specific petition type and situational factors. Each checklist is built from published USCIS form instructions and policy guidance as of April 2026. Items are tagged as required, conditional, or recommended, so you know exactly what you must include versus what helps your case.
Base documents = Core documents required for every petition in this category
Situational additions = Documents added based on your toggles (dependants, prior immigration issues, employer sponsor, etc.)
Nigerian-specific notes = Additional requirements or warnings specific to applicants with Nigerian documents
Final checklist = Base + situational additions, organised by section
Why Document Preparation Is Critical for Nigerian Applicants
Nigerian applicants face specific documentation challenges that applicants from many other countries do not. Nigerian educational certificates, birth certificates, and marriage certificates may need additional verification through bodies like the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), or the National Universities Commission (NUC). Some documents require apostille certification or attestation before USCIS will accept them.
Additionally, all documents issued in any Nigerian language other than English require certified English translation. While most official Nigerian documents are in English, tribal or local language documents, customary marriage certificates, and some state-level records may require translation. Any inconsistency in name spelling between your Nigerian documents and your US immigration records can trigger RFEs or delays.
Nigerian Documents and USCIS: What You Need to Know
Nigerian Passport
Your Nigerian international passport is your primary identity document. It must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay, or valid at the time of petition filing for USCIS filings within the US. Always ensure your name on your petition exactly matches the name on your passport, including middle names, hyphenations, and any name variations.
Nigerian Birth Certificate
Nigeria issues birth certificates through the National Population Commission (NPC). The NPC long-form birth certificate is generally preferred. Hospital birth records or church baptism certificates are sometimes used as supplementary evidence when the NPC certificate is unavailable, but they must be accompanied by an affidavit explaining the absence of the official certificate. For US immigration purposes, the birth certificate must show your full name, parents’ full names, and date and place of birth.
Nigerian Marriage Certificate
Nigeria recognizes both statutory (registry) marriage and customary marriage. For USCIS purposes, a statutory (civil) marriage certificate from the Nigerian Registry of Marriages is generally more straightforward. Customary marriages require additional documentation: evidence of the customary ceremony, evidence recognized by the local community and government, and potentially an affidavit from family elders. If you have had any prior marriages, you must document all of them and their termination (divorce decree or death certificate).
