What Nigerian Graduates Consistently Get Wrong About the Journey
Thinking ILR is the same as citizenship
ILR is permanent residence, not citizenship. You cannot vote, hold a British passport, or pass citizenship to children born abroad on ILR. You need to hold ILR for 12 months and then apply separately for naturalisation. Many Nigerian graduates celebrate ILR as the final milestone without realising it is the second-to-last step, with another 1 to 2 years and another £1,500 fee ahead.
Underestimating the IHS cost across the full journey
The Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year per person for Skilled Worker from 2024) is paid upfront for the full visa duration on every Skilled Worker application. A 3-year Skilled Worker visa costs £3,105 IHS per person. If you need a renewal before ILR, you pay it again. Over the full journey, a family of three can pay £20,000 to £30,000 in IHS alone across Student and Skilled Worker visas. Most Nigerian graduates have never calculated this total and are shocked when they do.
Assuming the journey takes about 5 or 6 years total
The minimum path from UK Student arrival to British citizenship is typically 8 to 9 years even for someone who switches to Skilled Worker on their first day of Graduate Route and never needs a visa renewal. Most people take 10 to 12 years. The 5-year ILR qualifying period only starts from Skilled Worker day 1, not from UK arrival. This surprises many Nigerians who have been in the UK for 4 to 5 years studying and on Graduate Route and assume they are close to ILR.
How the British Naturalisation Timeline Calculator Works
The calculator takes four key dates (UK arrival, degree completion, Skilled Worker switch, and naturalisation) and computes every milestone date in between, along with the visa fees payable at each stage. It applies current 2024 Home Office fee rates, calculates the IHS for each visa period, and accumulates the total cost from Student visa to British passport.
