xG Tracker: Step-by-Step Performance Analysis
The Expected Goals (xG) Tracker tool helps you compare a football team’s actual performance against their expected performance. This comparison reveals if a team is overperforming or underperforming based on the quality of chances created and conceded.
- xG (Expected Goals): Measures the quality of goalscoring chances a team creates.
- xGA (Expected Goals Against): Measures the quality of chances a team concedes.
2. Enter Team and Match Data
Follow these steps to input the required match statistics into the tool:
- Name the Teams: Enter the Home Team name and the Away Team name in the first two input fields. This customizes the result labels.
- Input Home Team Statistics:
- Enter the Home Team’s Actual Goals Scored (Total goals they scored).
- Enter the Home Team’s Expected Goals (xG) (The expected total of goals for them).
- Enter the Home Team’s Goals Conceded (Total goals they conceded).
- Enter the Home Team’s Expected Goals Against (xGA) (The expected total of goals against them).
- Input Away Team Statistics: Repeat the process for the Away Team using the corresponding four input fields (Actual Goals, xG, Conceded, xGA).
- Analyze Performance: Click the Analyze xG Performance button at the bottom of the input card to view the results.
3. Interpret the Results (xG Analysis)
The tool calculates the difference between actual performance and expected performance. This difference provides clear insights into team strength.
- Attack Performance (Goals vs xG):
- A positive difference means the team is Overperforming. They score more than the quality of their chances suggests (Good finishing).
- A negative difference means the team is Underperforming. They score less than the quality of their chances suggests (Poor finishing).
- Defense Performance (Conceded vs xGA):
- A negative difference means the team is Excellent. They concede fewer goals than the quality of chances faced suggests (Strong Goalkeeping/Defense).
- A positive difference means the team is Weak. They concede more goals than the quality of chances faced suggests (Weak Goalkeeping/Defense).
- Overall xG Rating: This rating provides a simple, consolidated score (from 1 to 5 stars) that combines the attack and defense differences for a quick summary of the team’s underlying strength.
- Key Insights: Review the auto-generated sentences in the Key Insights section. These insights offer specific, plain-language conclusions about the team’s performance, such as identifying excellent finishers or defensive vulnerabilities.
