Your Quick Guide to the Nigerian Bonds Price Calculator

Part 1: Entering the Inputs (The Setup)

The calculator needs six pieces of data. Get these right, and the hard work is done.

  • Face Value (₦): This is the principal amount. It is the money the government promises to pay you back on the maturity date. For instance, if you bought 10 units of a ₦10,000 bond, your face value is ₦100,000.
  • Coupon Rate (%): This is the bond’s fixed interest rate, expressed annually. If the bond says 12.50%, enter 12.50. This determines your regular cash payouts.
  • Yield to Maturity (YTM) (%): This is the market’s current interest rate for bonds with similar risk. It is the single most important input because it tells the calculator how to discount future payments to today’s value (Present Value). If YTM is higher than the Coupon Rate, the price will be lower than the face value, and vice-versa. Enter it as a percentage, like 13.00.
  • Years to Maturity: How many years are left until the government pays you the face value. Enter 5 for five years.
  • Coupon Payment Frequency: Most Nigerian FGN Bonds pay Semi-Annual (twice a year), which is the default selection (2). Only change this if your bond is different.
  • Days Since Last Coupon Payment: This input calculates the Accrued Interest. If you buy a bond between payment dates, you must pay the seller the interest accrued since the last payment. Look up the bond’s last payment date and count the days. Enter 45 if 45 days have passed.

Part 2: Understanding the Results

Hit the Calculate Bond Price button. Three key metrics will appear, giving you a full picture of the bond’s worth:

1. Clean Price (The Fair Price)

The Clean Price is the Present Value (PV) of all future cash flows (coupons plus principal). It is the true, base price of the bond on the open market, excluding any interest accrued since the last payment. It is the number financial analysts care about most.

2. Accrued Interest (The Interest Split)

This is the interest that has accumulated since the last coupon date. It is the amount you pay the seller to cover the portion of the coupon they earned before selling the bond to you.

3. Dirty Price (The Total Price You Pay)

The Dirty Price is the total amount of money that leaves your pocket today.

Dirty Price = Clean Price + Accrued Interest

It is the final settlement price. Knowing this prevents financial surprises at the checkout.

Part 3: Why This Matters (The Benefit)

This calculator does more than just give a number; it shows you the full Payment Schedule & Breakdown. You will see a table detailing the coupon payments, the final principal repayment, and the Present Value for every single cash flow.

This breakdown confirms the Clean Price is the sum of those Present Values:

By using this tool, you get clarity and confidence. You instantly know if a bond is fairly priced based on current market rates. It is the smart way to invest.
