Foreign Shopping
Ever seen a sweet deal on AliExpress, Temu, Amazon or ASOS, converted the price in your head, and shouted, “E be things!”? Hold up. The final cost in Naira (β¦) is never just the product price multiplied by the parallel market rate. It includes shipping, import duty, and customs fees. This calculator tells you the real final price, helping you decide if that foreign item is truly a better deal than buying locally.

Why Do I Need This Calculator?
Step 1: Input Product Details
Start with the basics. This section determines the initial foreign currency cost.
- Select Currency and Price: Choose the currency of the store (e.g., USD for Amazon US, GBP for ASOS). Enter the price listed on the foreign website into the Item Price field.
- Enter Quantity: Type how many items you are buying. This updates the total foreign price immediately.
Step 2: Add Shipping and Import Fees
This is the part that catches everyone out. Use the shipping cost quoted by your delivery agent or the store.
- Shipping Cost: Input the cost of shipping in the item’s original currency. If you use a freight forwarder, this may be zero or already included in other fees, so enter 0.00 if it does not apply.
- Import Duty (%): This is the tax rate applied by Nigeria Customs. The default value is set to 7.5%, which is a common starting point. Adjust this percentage if you know the exact duty for your item type.
- Customs Fee: Enter any fixed handling fee charged by your shipping agent or courier for customs clearance. This is usually a flat fee in the foreign currency.
Tip: Need to check a popular store? Click one of the Common Stores buttons (like Amazon US or ASOS UK) for a quick preset of the currency and estimated fees. It saves time!
Step 3: Run the Calculation
Click the large green Calculate Total Cost π° button. The tool instantly uses the current, real-time exchange rate to convert every single cost factor into Naira (β¦).
Step 4: Analyze Your Results
The results section provides the full breakdown.
- Total Cost in Naira: This is the most important number. It shows the true cost you will pay in β¦ after all fees are added.
- Cost Breakdown: Review the detailed list: Item Price (β¦), Shipping (β¦), Import Duty (β¦), and Customs Processing (β¦). The duty and processing fees often make up a significant portion of the total.
- Payment Options: See estimates for paying via Naira card, PayPal, or Crypto. Note that card and PayPal options usually have higher final Naira rates due to transaction fees.
Step 5: Compare with Local Price
Check if the hassle is worth it.
- Local Price Input: In the Is It Worth It? section, enter the price of the same item if you were to buy it from a local Nigerian store.
- Result: The calculator shows if you will Save or Spend More. A big green You Save figure means the foreign deal is a win. If it shows You Spend More, consider buying locally.
