For Express Entry and most immigration programs, IELTS General Training is the accepted test. IELTS Academic is accepted for CEC and some PNPs. CELPIP is only available in Canada.
Maximum is 136 points (34 per skill at CLB 10). These points feed directly into your overall CRS score.
What Nigerian IELTS Test Takers Get Wrong
- β Taking IELTS Academic for Express Entry when IELTS General Training is required for most FSW and CEC applications.
- β Focusing on the overall band score instead of the individual skill scores. IRCC looks at each skill separately; an overall 7.0 with a 6.0 writing may not meet the CLB 7 requirement in writing.
- β Not retaking the test after improving writing. Writing is the most commonly weak skill for Nigerian candidates; a band 7.0 in writing (CLB 9) versus 6.5 (CLB 8) is a difference of 7 CRS points per skill.
- β Using a test result that is more than 2 years old. IRCC only accepts language test results dated within 2 years of the PR application.
- β Not checking whether the specific test type (General vs Academic) is accepted for the program they are applying to. Some PNP streams accept Academic; most federal programs require General.
How the IELTS to CLB Conversion Works
The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the scale IRCC uses to measure English language proficiency. It runs from CLB 1 (beginner) to CLB 12 (advanced). For immigration purposes, the relevant range is CLB 4 to CLB 10.
The conversion is a direct table lookup published by IRCC. There is no formula; it is a fixed mapping:
CRS Language Points = sum of CRS_points_table[CLB] for all 4 skills
Lowest CLB = min(Listening CLB, Reading CLB, Writing CLB, Speaking CLB)
The lowest CLB across all four skills is what determines whether you meet a program’s minimum. If three skills are CLB 9 and one skill is CLB 6, you are assessed as CLB 6 for program eligibility purposes, even though your other skills are strong.

CLB to CRS Points Table (Single Applicant)
| CLB Level | CRS Points per Skill | Total for 4 Skills |
|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 34 | 136 |
| CLB 9 | 31 | 124 |
| CLB 8 | 22 | 88 |
| CLB 7 | 17 | 68 |
| CLB 6 | 8 | 32 |
| CLB 5 | 6 | 24 |
| CLB 4 | 6 | 24 |
The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is 9 CRS points per skill, or 36 points across all four skills. For many Nigerian applicants who are 30 to 40 points below the draw cutoff, improving all four skills from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is the most direct way to close the gap without needing a job offer or additional work experience.
The Writing Score: Where Most Nigerian Applicants Lose Points
In the author’s experience reviewing Nigerian Express Entry profiles, writing is the most commonly underperforming skill. IELTS General Training writing is assessed on task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range. Many well-educated Nigerian professionals score 6.0 to 6.5 in writing while scoring 8.0 or higher in reading and listening.
The impact of a writing score of 6.5 (CLB 8) versus 7.0 (CLB 9) is 9 fewer CRS points, plus the risk of failing program minimums that require CLB 9 in all skills. A single targeted writing preparation push of 6 to 10 weeks has helped many Nigerian applicants move from 6.5 to 7.0 in writing and gain 9 CRS points in the process.
CELPIP vs IELTS General: Which Should Nigerian Applicants Choose?
Both IELTS General Training and CELPIP are accepted for most Canadian immigration programs. CELPIP is only available at test centers within Canada, so it is only relevant for Nigerian applicants already in Canada (on a study or work permit). Most Nigerians in Nigeria take IELTS General Training because it is widely available at British Council and IDP centers across Nigeria.
CELPIP tends to feel more natural for people who are already immersed in Canadian life, as the test scenarios (banking, work emails, community notices) mirror Canadian daily situations. IELTS is the standard for applicants testing from Nigeria.
Program Minimums: What CLB Level You Actually Need

| Ontario Tech Draw (OINP) | CLB 7 | Using FSW selection factor grid |
| BC PNP Tech Pilot | CLB 8 (preferred) | CLB 7 minimum; higher score improves SIRS score |
| SINP International Skilled Worker | CLB 6 | CLB 7+ improves EOI score |
| AAIP Express Entry (Alberta) | CLB 7 | FSW-aligned requirements |
| French-language draws | NCLC 7+ (French) + CLB 5+ (English) | Separate French test required (TEF or TCF) |

When to Retake the IELTS
You should consider retaking if: any single skill is below CLB 7 and you are targeting FSW or CEC TEER 1; your lowest CLB is 8 and you believe you can reach CLB 9 with preparation; or your test result is approaching 2 years old (IRCC only accepts results within 2 years of PR application). Each IELTS attempt costs approximately NGN 120,000 to 150,000 at current Nigerian test center fees. Improving a single skill from CLB 8 to CLB 9 gains 9 CRS points, which can be worth significantly more in terms of immigration outcomes.
Common Questions
Is IELTS Academic accepted for Canadian immigration?
IELTS Academic is accepted for CEC and some PNP streams. For FSW (Federal Skilled Worker), IRCC accepts both Academic and General Training. However, most applicants take General Training because it is designed for non-academic purposes and is typically slightly easier for working professionals. Check the specific program requirements at IRCC’s website before testing.
How long is an IELTS result valid for Canadian immigration?
IRCC requires that language test results be dated within 2 years of the date you submit your PR application. If your test is approaching 2 years old and your PR application is not yet submitted, plan to retake the test or submit before the 2-year deadline.
What is CELPIP and can I take it in Nigeria?
CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a test developed by Paragon Testing Enterprises, a University of British Columbia company. It is currently only available at test centers in Canada. Nigerian applicants who are already in Canada on a study or work permit can take CELPIP. Those applying from Nigeria must take IELTS or one of the other IRCC-accepted English tests.
Does my CLB change if I take the IELTS multiple times?
No. IRCC uses the scores from the most recent valid test you submit with your Express Entry profile. Each test attempt is independent. You can submit your best result, but you cannot combine scores from different test sittings (for example, taking the best reading score from one attempt and the best writing score from another).
What if my IELTS score shows CLB 7 in three skills and CLB 6 in one?
For program minimums, your effective CLB is the lowest score across all four skills. One skill at CLB 6 means you do not meet the CLB 7 minimum for FSW or CEC TEER 1, even if the other three skills are CLB 9. You either need to retake the test to improve the weak skill or apply for a program with a lower minimum (like CEC TEER 2-3 at CLB 5).
Does a higher language score always help my CRS score?
Yes, up to CLB 10. Each CLB level above CLB 9 (i.e., reaching CLB 10) adds 3 more points per skill. Improving from CLB 9 to CLB 10 across all four skills adds 12 CRS points. Combined with the skill transferability bonus that strong language triggers, the total CRS impact of a very strong language score can be 30 to 50 points above a CLB 7 baseline.
