What this tool does
It takes your specific profile (study level, funding source, dependants, prior visa history) and gives you a tailored document checklist for the Australia Student Visa, officially known as Subclass 500. Not a generic list you could find on any government page. A checklist that reflects your situation.
The tool does not assess your eligibility. It does not tell you whether you will be approved. It helps you not miss documents before you lodge.
How the checklist logic works
Every Australian student visa application shares a core document set. On top of that, your answers add conditional documents. The logic looks like this:
For example, a PhD student on a government scholarship travelling with a spouse has a significantly longer checklist than a solo undergraduate on personal funds. The tool adjusts for that automatically.
Why Nigerians apply for Australian student visas
Australia has become a serious destination in the last 5 years for Nigerian students. A few things drive that. First, the quality of the universities. Eight of the top 100 globally ranked universities are in Australia, and they actively recruit international students. Second, post-study work options. The Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) lets you stay and work in Australia after finishing your degree, anywhere from 2 to 6 years depending on your qualification and study location. Third, there is a pathway to permanent residence. Strong points-tested PR streams like the Skilled Independent visa mean a student who builds local work experience can transition to PR. That combination of education, work rights, and a PR pathway is what makes Australia attractive to young Nigerians who want more than just a degree.
Core documents every applicant needs
Regardless of your profile, the following documents are required for every Subclass 500 application from Nigeria:
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Valid passport | Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended course end |
| Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) | Issued by your CRICOS registered institution after you accept their offer and pay fees |
| Proof of funds | Bank statements showing funds for tuition plus living costs. Minimum AUD 21,041 per year for living, plus full tuition |
| English language results | IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, or OET. Must meet your institution’s minimum and be within 2 years |
| OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) | Must cover the full course duration. Purchase before lodging your application |
| GTE statement | Genuine Temporary Entrant statement. Explains why you want to study in Australia and your ties to Nigeria |
| Academic transcripts and certificates | All prior qualifications that qualify you for the course |
| Biometric data | Submitted at a VFS Global centre in Nigeria |
Table of Truth: sample profiles and their checklist size
This gives you a rough idea of how document requirements scale with your profile.
| Profile | Approx. Documents | Key additional items |
|---|---|---|
| Solo undergrad, personal funds, first visa | 12 to 15 | Sponsor letter if funds are family-supported |
| Masters student, university scholarship | 13 to 16 | Scholarship award letter, reduced funds evidence |
| PhD student, govt scholarship, spouse | 20 to 26 | Marriage certificate, spouse proof of funds, OSHC for spouse, spouse GTE, dependant medical |
| Undergrad, family funds, prior visa refusal | 16 to 20 | Detailed explanation of prior refusal, stronger GTE, possibly legal rep cover letter |
| ELICOS (English course), personal funds | 10 to 13 | Shorter course, lighter documentation but GTE still required |
The GTE requirement: what Nigerian applicants need to know
The Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement is the part most Nigerians underestimate. It is not a formality. Australian immigration officers use it to assess whether you genuinely intend to study and return home, or whether you are using the student visa as a migration strategy.
Your GTE statement should cover: your current situation in Nigeria (employment, family, property), why this specific course at this specific institution fits your career goals, what you plan to do with the qualification when you return, and any past travel history that shows you have respected visa conditions before.
Financial evidence: what counts and what raises flags
Australia does not require a mandatory Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) the way Canada does. But you need to show consistent, adequate funds. The current living cost requirement set by DIBP is AUD 21,041 per year for the primary applicant, AUD 7,362 for a partner, and AUD 3,152 per child. These figures are updated annually, so always check the official DIBP site before you apply.
What raises a flag: funds that appeared in your account suddenly within 2 to 4 weeks before applying, inconsistency between the amount on a sponsor letter and what is shown in bank statements, and funds in an account that does not belong to the applicant or a clearly identified sponsor.
Realistic scenarios
Scenario 1: Solo postgraduate student, personal savings
Emeka is applying for a 1.5-year Master of Finance at a Sydney university. He is self-funded, single, no dependants, first Australian visa. His checklist includes the core 8 items, plus 6 months of personal bank statements showing at least AUD 55,000 (tuition plus living), a GTE statement, academic transcripts, IELTS 6.5, OSHC for 1.5 years, and his medical exam results. That is roughly 14 to 16 documents.
Scenario 2: PhD student with spouse, government scholarship
Adaeze won an Australia Awards scholarship for a 3-year PhD at the University of Queensland. She is bringing her husband who will not be studying. Her checklist is much longer: the scholarship award letter replaces most of the financial evidence, but she still needs OSHC for both herself and her spouse, her husband’s GTE explanation, proof of marriage, his passport, medical exams for both, and potentially evidence of his intent to return to Nigeria. Total: 22 to 28 documents.
Scenario 3: Undergraduate student, prior visa refusal
Tunde previously had a UK visitor visa refused and never travelled abroad. This does not directly affect his Australian application, but it adds complexity. He needs to declare the refusal, explain the circumstances, and his GTE statement needs to work harder to establish his genuine intent. His document count is standard (12 to 15) but the quality and detail of his GTE and the completeness of his financial evidence matter more than usual.
What this tool does not cover
This tool does not assess GTE risk, calculate your course costs, or predict approval probability. It also does not cover secondary student visas for children, the Student Guardian visa (Subclass 590), or applications lodged onshore in Australia. For those, visit the official DIBP website or consult a registered migration agent.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GIC for an Australian student visa as a Nigerian?
No. Australia does not use the GIC system (that is a Canadian requirement). You show financial capacity through bank statements, scholarship letters, or sponsor documentation. The threshold is AUD 21,041 per year for living costs, plus full tuition.
What English test is accepted?
IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1, and OET are all accepted. Most universities want IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 overall. Check your specific institution’s requirement as it varies by course and faculty.
Do I need a medical exam from Nigeria?
Most Nigerian applicants are asked to complete an upfront health examination and chest X-ray. This is arranged through a DIBP-approved panel physician in Nigeria. Your results go directly to the immigration department and do not come to you.
Can my spouse work in Australia on my student visa?
It depends on your study level. Partners of postgraduate research students (Master by research, PhD) generally get full work rights. Partners of other student visa holders get limited or no work rights. Verify the current rules on the DIBP website before making financial plans based on your spouse working.
How early should I start gathering documents?
Aim to start 10 to 14 weeks before your intended course start date. Police clearance certificates from Nigeria can take 4 to 6 weeks. Medical exams need to be booked in advance. OSHC purchase and CoE issuance also take time to coordinate.
What happens if my funding situation changes after I apply?
If your financial circumstances change significantly after lodging, you may need to notify DIBP and provide updated evidence. Submitting false or outdated financial evidence is a serious issue that can result in refusal and future bans.
