Key factNo hour restrictionNo sponsor needed
The Graduate Route is one of the most flexible visas in the UK immigration system. Unlike the Student visa, there are no weekly hour caps and no sponsorship requirements. You can work, freelance, change jobs, or run a business without notifying the Home Office.
✓
Work any number of hours per week
No weekly limit. Work full-time, part-time, or overtime. This is unlike Student visa which caps term-time hours at 20 per week.
✓
Change jobs or employers at any time
No need to notify the Home Office. Switch jobs freely, as many times as you like. You are not tied to any employer.
✓
Work multiple jobs simultaneously
Hold two or three jobs at the same time. A main job plus freelance or part-time work is fully permitted. Common among Nigerian Graduate Route holders.
✓
Be self-employed or freelance
Register as a sole trader with HMRC and file a Self Assessment tax return. Freelance coding, tutoring, consulting, content, and other services are permitted.
✓
Form and operate a limited company
You can set up a limited company and act as a director. Take advice from an accountant on tax structure and HMRC registration requirements.
✓
Access the NHS as a health surcharge payer
You paid the IHS when applying for Graduate Route. You and any dependants are entitled to NHS treatment during the visa period.
!
Work as a doctor, dentist, or in training posts
Working in NHS foundation or specialty training posts as a doctor or dentist requires specific UKVI conditions. General clinical roles (nurse, physio, HCA) are unrestricted.
!
Bring dependants on Graduate Route
Dependants can join only if they were already in the UK on a dependant Student visa before 1 January 2024. Most new Nigerian graduates cannot bring new dependants on Graduate Route.
✗
Work as a professional athlete or sports coach
Graduate Route explicitly prohibits professional sports roles. This restriction is in the visa conditions and applies regardless of the sport or contract type.
✗
Access public funds or claim benefits
Graduate Route (like most UK work visas) is subject to a No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition. You cannot claim Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or most state benefits.
✗
Renew or extend Graduate Route
Graduate Route is a one-time visa and cannot be renewed. When it expires (2 or 3 years), you must either switch to another visa or leave the UK.
✗
Count Graduate Route time toward ILR
Time on Graduate Route does not qualify toward the 5-year ILR qualifying period. Only Skilled Worker, Global Talent, and similar qualifying routes count. Switch as early as possible.
From 1 January 2024, new international students can no longer bring dependant family members unless enrolled on a postgraduate research programme. This means most Nigerian graduates who started their degree in or after the 2024 academic year cannot bring a spouse or children to the UK on a Student visa dependant route. When they switch to Graduate Route, dependants are only allowed if the dependant was already lawfully in the UK before the restriction date. If you are bringing a spouse to the UK, you will need to wait until you switch to Skilled Worker (which still allows dependants).
Graduate Route permits all three. Choose what matches your situation.
Employed (PAYE): your employer deducts income tax and National Insurance from each payslip. You receive a P60 at year end. Common for most Nigerian graduates starting their first UK job.

Common Tax and Earnings Mistakes on Graduate Route
If you do any freelance work, including building websites, tutoring, or consultancy, you must register as self-employed with HMRC and file a Self Assessment return by 31 January each year. Failing to do this can result in fines even if your tax bill is small.
✗
Emergency tax code on first UK job (BR or 0T code)
Your first UK employer may put you on an emergency tax code if you do not provide a P45 from a previous employer. This can mean you pay income tax at 20% from pound one, not from the £12,570 personal allowance threshold. Contact HMRC to fix your tax code. Any overpaid tax is refunded.
✗
Not declaring freelance income on a main PAYE job
If you have a main PAYE job and also earn freelance income above £1,000, you must still file a Self Assessment tax return to declare the freelance income. Many Nigerian Graduate Route holders assume their PAYE tax covers everything. It does not cover freelance earnings.
How the Graduate Route Earnings Simulator Works
The simulator takes your annual gross income (or converts your hourly rate and hours per week into an annual figure), then applies the 2024 to 2025 UK income tax and National Insurance rates to estimate take-home pay. The Naira equivalent is calculated at the reference rate you enter.
Annual Gross = Hourly Rate × Hours/Week × 52
Personal Allow = £12,570 (2024/25, standard)
Taxable Income = Annual Gross – Personal Allowance
Income Tax = 0% on first £12,570
+ 20% on £12,571 to £50,270
+ 40% on £50,271 to £125,140
NI (Employee) = 8% on £12,570 to £50,270
+ 2% above £50,270
Take-Home = Annual Gross – Income Tax – NI
Monthly THPay = Take-Home ÷ 12
Naira Equiv = Take-Home × Exchange Rate
Tax estimates are approximations only. Actual take-home depends on your specific tax code, pension contributions, student loan deductions, any benefits in kind, and your complete income picture. The figures above assume the standard personal allowance (£12,570) and no other adjustments. For self-employed workers, the calculation is on profit (income minus allowable expenses), not gross income. Use this tool to estimate and plan, not to file your tax return.
Naira estimates at ₦2,100/£1. Tax estimates based on 2024/25 rates with standard personal allowance. No student loan, pension, or other deductions included.
Freelance work adds income but requires Self Assessment. A Nigerian graduate earning £30,000 on PAYE who also earns £6,000 from freelance work has a combined gross income of £36,000. The additional £6,000 is taxed at 20% (income tax) plus Class 4 NI at 6%, after any allowable business expenses are deducted. Register as self-employed with HMRC as soon as you receive your first freelance payment above £1,000. The deadline for Self Assessment registration is 5 October in the second tax year of self-employment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work unlimited hours on Graduate Route?
Yes. The Graduate Route has no weekly hour limit. You can work full-time, overtime, multiple jobs, or freelance as many hours as you and your employer or clients agree. This is a major difference from the Student visa, which limits term-time work to 20 hours per week.
Can I freelance or be self-employed on Graduate Route?
Yes. Self-employment and freelance work are fully permitted. Register with HMRC as a sole trader and file a Self Assessment return. If your freelance income is below £1,000 in a tax year, you may be covered by the trading allowance and may not need to register. Above £1,000, registration and Self Assessment are mandatory.
Do I pay National Insurance on Graduate Route?
Yes. Graduate Route holders pay income tax and National Insurance on their UK earnings at the same rates as UK citizens and settled residents. There is no exemption for visa holders. NI contributions also count toward the UK State Pension and some benefits entitlement, though NRPF conditions restrict which benefits you can access during the visa period.
What is the personal allowance and can I use it on Graduate Route?
The personal allowance is £12,570 for 2024 to 2025. This is the amount of income you can earn each tax year before paying income tax. Graduate Route holders are entitled to the full personal allowance, the same as UK residents. Your employer should apply this through your PAYE tax code (usually 1257L). If your code is wrong (emergency code BR or 0T), contact HMRC to correct it.
Disclaimer: Tax estimates in this tool are based on 2024 to 2025 UK income tax and National Insurance rates with a standard personal allowance of £12,570 and no other adjustments. Actual take-home pay will vary based on your specific tax code, pension contributions, student loan deductions (if applicable), salary sacrifice arrangements, and other individual factors. Self-employed estimates are on profit before expenses. This tool is for planning purposes only and is not a substitute for HMRC’s tax calculators or professional tax advice.
