IELTS Score to CRS Points Calculator
See exactly how many CRS points your IELTS bands give you in Express Entry, and what improving each band by 0.5 is worth. Based on the official 2025 IRCC CRS tables.
You are applying as
Spouse language scores are worth fewer CRS points than the principal applicant’s.
Highest education level
Education affects the combined language + education CRS score, not language points alone.
Your IELTS General Training scores
Enter your actual or expected band score. Half-band increments (e.g. 6.5, 7.5) are supported.
What improving each skill by 0.5 band is worth
The skill where improvement gives the most CRS points is your highest-value study target.
Your IELTS scores as CLB levels
| Skill | Your band | CLB level | CRS language pts | Status |

If you could improve your scores
Simulated gain from achieving CLB 9 in all skills (the optimal IELTS target for Express Entry)
CRS language points are calculated from IRCC’s official tables. The full CRS score also includes education, work experience, age, and adaptability factors not shown here.

| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | Strong bonus; target for FSW |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | Good; most common range |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | Minimum for FSW; lower points |

| CLB 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 | Not eligible for Express Entry |
IELTS Academic uses slightly different CLB conversion tables. Express Entry uses IELTS General Training for language testing.
CRS language points reference table (principal applicant, no spouse)
| All 4 skills at band | CLB level | Language CRS pts | FSW eligible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 (all) | CLB 10+ | 136 | Yes |
| 8.0 – 8.5 (all) | CLB 9 – 10 | 124 – 136 | Yes |
| 7.5 (all) | CLB 8 | 110 | Yes |
| 7.0 (all) | CLB 8 (R) / 9 (L/W/S) | mixed ~116 | Yes |
| 6.5 (all) | CLB 7 – 8 | 84 – 110 | Yes (CLB7+) |
| 6.0 (all) | CLB 7 | 68 – 84 | Minimum |
| 5.5 or below (any) | Below CLB 7 | 0 (disqualified) | No |
Scores are per skill, not average. One skill below CLB 7 disqualifies the entire FSW application regardless of other scores.
IELTS mistakes that cost Nigerian applicants CRS points and time
- Taking IELTS Academic instead of IELTS General Training for Express Entry. Academic is for university admissions; General Training is what IRCC requires for immigration.
- Averaging scores and assuming that is the CRS input. CRS converts each skill individually to CLB; one weak skill can be worth far fewer points than the others.
- Not checking the 2-year validity of IELTS results. If your score is about to expire while you are still in the pool, you may need to retake before submitting an application.
- Settling for CLB 7 across the board without realising that pushing any skill to CLB 9 can add 20 to 30+ CRS points.
- Assuming Speaking is easy and not preparing for it. Speaking is where many Nigerian applicants lose 0.5 to 1 band compared to their written skills.
Common questions
How IELTS Scores Convert to CRS Points in Express Entry
IRCC does not use your raw IELTS band score directly. First, it converts each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) into a CLB level using a published conversion table. Then it awards CRS points based on the CLB level of each individual skill. The four skills are scored separately, then summed. This means a 7.0 in Reading counts differently from a 7.0 in Listening, because the IELTS-to-CLB conversion table is not uniform across skills.
The formula:
CRS_language_pts = sum(CLB_to_CRS_pts(CLB_skill) for each skill)
Total_language_CRS = Listening_pts + Reading_pts + Writing_pts + Speaking_pts
For a principal applicant without a spouse, the maximum language CRS points from IELTS is 136 (all four skills at CLB 10 or higher). For an applicant with a spouse on their profile, language points are split differently and the maximum is lower. The spouse’s own language scores add a separate pool of points.
Why One Weak Skill Can Hurt Your Entire CRS Score
This is the most important thing to understand about IELTS and Express Entry. Each skill is converted and scored independently. So if three of your skills are at CLB 9 but one is at CLB 7, you do not get the CLB 9 bonus for that skill. The CLB 7 skill is capped at the CLB 7 points value. The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 language points for a single skill can be 10 to 17 CRS points. If your weakest skill is dragging down your total by 30 or more CRS points compared to where you would be with balanced CLB 9 scores, that is the thing to fix.
What CLB 9 vs CLB 7 Actually Means in Points
The CRS points table for language (first official language, no spouse) assigns different points per CLB band. CLB 10 or higher gives the highest points per skill. CLB 9 is the next tier. CLB 8 and CLB 7 have progressively lower values. The gap between a profile where all skills are CLB 7 and one where all skills are CLB 9 is roughly 50 to 60 CRS points. At current All Programs draw cutoffs (typically 530 to 560), a 50-point difference can be the difference between waiting 2 years and waiting 3 months.
IELTS General Training vs Academic
For Express Entry, IRCC only accepts IELTS General Training for English language testing. IELTS Academic is used for university admissions and is a different test with a different scoring context. If you took IELTS Academic for a Canadian university application, you cannot use those scores for your Express Entry profile. You need to take IELTS General Training separately. The tests have the same Listening and Speaking components, but different Reading and Writing tasks.
CELPIP as an alternative
CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is the only other English test IRCC accepts for Express Entry. It is a computer-based test taken in Canada or at authorized centers. Some Nigerian applicants find CELPIP easier because it is entirely computer-based and does not require a face-to-face Speaking exam. The CLB conversion for CELPIP maps directly (CELPIP 9 = CLB 9, for example), which makes it simpler to calculate. The test is currently available at fewer centers in Nigeria than IELTS.
How Long IELTS Results Are Valid for Express Entry
IELTS results are valid for 2 years. For Express Entry, the results must be valid at the time you create or update your profile and at the time you submit your permanent residence application post-ITA. If your scores expire while you are in the pool, your profile will no longer meet the language requirement and you may be removed. Plan your test timing so that your results remain valid through the entire application process, including the IRCC processing time of 4 to 8 months after you submit.
Assumptions Used in This Calculator
- CRS points tables reflect IRCC’s 2025 published values for the Federal Skilled Worker stream
- IELTS General Training to CLB conversion uses the official IRCC conversion chart
- Language points shown are for the first official language only (English). A second official language (French) adds additional points not shown here
- The “combined language and education” score uses IRCC’s combined human capital table which weights education and language together
- Spouse on profile language scores use the separate IRCC spouse language points table
- Full CRS score requires age, education, work experience, and adaptability factors not included in this tool
