How This Planner Works
This tool estimates the cost and timeline for getting your Nigerian credentials evaluated by a recognized Canadian body while you are studying on a study permit. It also estimates how that evaluation affects your PR pathway, specifically your CRS score in Express Entry.
The formula behind the estimate is straightforward:
Start-by Date = Target PR Application Date – Processing Time – 30 days buffer
CRS Impact = Education factor points (based on equivalency level) applied at profile creation
The numbers used here come from publicly available fee schedules from WES, ICAS, IQAS, and CES as of 2024-2025. They are estimates. Fees change. Always verify at the official agency website before paying.
Why Nigerians in Canada Need This
A lot of Nigerians arrive in Canada on study permits, finish their programs, and then realize their Nigerian degree was never formally evaluated. That is a problem, because a completed foreign credential assessment is worth additional CRS points in Express Entry and is often required as evidence in PNP streams.
Getting evaluated while still studying is smarter than waiting. You have time. Your Nigerian institution is still reachable for transcript requests. And if there are issues, like a delayed transcript from UNILAG or ABU, you have room to fix them before your permit situation becomes urgent.

HND evaluation is the trickiest. Some bodies equate it to a 3-year diploma, others to a bachelor’s. WES tends to be more conservative with HND assessments. ICAS sometimes gives a more favorable result. It varies case by case, so do not assume a specific outcome.
How It Affects Your CRS Score
In Express Entry, education factors into your CRS score under three categories: level of education, Canadian education, and foreign education combined with language scores. A foreign degree evaluated and recognized as a bachelor’s degree can add roughly 23 to 26 points to your base CRS score, depending on your language scores and other factors.
The key thing: you do not get these points unless you have a completed evaluation report at the time you create your profile. Submitting one later does not retroactively update your score before a draw.

Realistic Scenarios
Scenario 1: Single Applicant, Bachelor’s Degree
Tunde has a 4-year degree from the University of Lagos in accounting. He is studying at Humber College in Ontario and plans to apply for PR via Express Entry in 2026. He should start his WES evaluation no later than early 2026, but ideally in late 2025, to allow time for UNILAG to send transcripts and WES to process. Estimated cost: CAD $265 to $320. Once done, he gets the bachelor’s education factor applied to his CRS score.
Scenario 2: Applicant with Spouse
Kemi and her husband Deji are both in Canada on study permits. Only one evaluation is needed for CRS if Kemi is the principal applicant, but having both evaluated may help if they ever need to compare profiles for which gets a higher score. Budget roughly CAD $530 to $640 for both, using WES standard processing.
Scenario 3: Applicant with Spouse and Child
Same as Scenario 2. The child’s credentials are generally not evaluated unless they are also an adult applicant pursuing their own pathway. No additional evaluation cost for a dependent child. Focus the budget on the principal applicant and secondary if needed.
Edge Cases and Common Questions
What if my Nigerian university closed or lost records?
This is a real problem for some older institutions or polytechnics. WES has a document-by-document review process for cases where transcripts cannot be obtained directly. You may be asked to submit alternative documentation. Start early and contact WES directly if you suspect a records issue.
Does NYSC affect my evaluation?
WES sometimes requests the NYSC discharge certificate as supporting documentation, though it is not always mandatory. It can help establish that you completed a full degree program and the post-graduation national service. Have it scanned and ready.
Can I use the same evaluation for both PNP and Express Entry?
Yes, in most cases. The WES report, for example, is accepted across most streams. Quebec’s MIFI evaluation is Quebec-specific and typically not used for federal Express Entry. Check the specific stream requirements before assuming cross-use.
When is the worst time to start this process?
The last few months before your study permit expires. At that point you are likely also dealing with PGWP applications, job searching, and PR prep. Nigerian universities and polytechnics can be slow in releasing transcripts. Starting at least 6 months before you need the evaluation result is the safer position.
